SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's tennis notched victories over nationally-ranked programs this past weekend at the first annual Surf and Volley Tournament held on the campus of the University of San Diego. SDSU joined the host school, USD, as well as Pacific-10 Conference members, Arizona and Southern California, in the three-day event.
In doubles action, the Aztecs took two-of-three matches against the Trojans. The combination of Christian Groh and Benedikt Stronk beat Southern Cal's Johan Berg and Kaes Van't Hof by a final tally of 8-2.
The team of 2004 Mountain West Conference freshman of the year Markus Dickhardt and Eugenio Romero-Wendlandt defeated Adam Loucks Brian Wright, 8-4. The Aztecs lone defeat came at the hands of USC's Jamil Al-Agba and Drew Hoskins. The two combined for an 8-5 victory over senior Armando Carrascosa and junior Daniel Jung.
In singles play, SDSU was victorious in four of the six matches with the Trojans. Dickhardt (6-1, 6-2), Jung (6-4, 6-2), Groh (6-3, 6-4) and Romero-Wendlandt (6-4, 3-6, 6-4), all recorded victories for the Aztecs.
"I am very impressed with the wins versus USC," head coach Gene Carswell said. "It showed our players that we can compete with the best in the nation."
In other competition, SDSU swept all three doubles matches against USD and took two-of-three against Arizona. In singles action, the Aztecs claimed victory in five of the six matches versus the Toreros. Against the Wildcats, SDSU won three of the six schedule matches with the Aztecs retiring in two of them.
"In regards to this tournament, I was very pleased with our results," Carswell said of his team's performance. "We came out against three good squads and put up excellent results. This weekend has given the guys some confidence heading into next week's ITA regionals."
The Aztecs return to action Oct. 20-25 when they travel to Malibu, Calif., for the ITA Western Championships.
