SAN DIEGO - San Diego State concluded play in the Aztec Invitational Saturday afternoon as it dropped a four-game match (17-30, 30-25, 23-30, 24-30) to the Wichita State Shockers.
With the loss, the Aztecs saw their record drop to 0-4 as they prepare for six straight matches on the road prior to returning home. The Shockers' victory improved their ledger to 2-1.
SDSU had a trio of players reach doubles digits in kills, getting career highs from Angela Verdenacci (12) and Ashley Bowker (10) along with 10 by Melissa Stapley. In addition, Sophomore Audra Dent contributed a personal-best eight blocks while teammate Ashley Bowker recorded seven.
Wichita State began the match in dominant fashion, hitting .739 in the first game en route to a 13-point victory. After that, the Aztecs settled down and controlled game two to even the match at one apiece. However, the visitors took early lead each of the final two games and went on to win the match.
WSU finished the contest with three players in double figures in kills, led by Elizabeth Meyers with 19. Both defensive specialist Karen Augspurger and libero Lara Geer reached double digits in digs with 15 and 13 respectively.
Up next for San Diego State is a trip to San Marcos, Texas to play in the Texas State Tournament.
SDSU will open play against the host school on Friday (Sept. 10) at 12:30 p.m. (CST). Other tourney participants include Mississippi and James Madison.
