SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's soccer team defeated Davidson College, 1-0, Friday afternoon in the second game of the third annual SDSU Tournament at the SDSU Sports Deck. The win, which was the first for the Aztecs in 2004, improved SDSU's record to 1-1-1, while Davidson fell to 1-1. Sophomore forward Jen Klunder knocked in the game-winning goal at the 78:39 mark when she gathered a loose ball from 15 yards out and tucked it in the lower-left corner. The goal was Klunder's second of her Aztec career. "It was a beautiful goal," said first-year head coach Mike Giuliano, who won his first game as an Aztec. "I feel good about the fact that we hung it out and finally got on the board. We really wanted this one." SDSU controlled much of the first half, outshooting the Wildcats, 6-1. However, Davidson put the pressure on in the second half, registering five shots on goal and holding a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper Sophia Perez played another solid game for the Aztecs, making six saves for her first shutout of the year. In three games this season, Perez has made 17 saves and has posted a 0.62 goals against average. "She (Perez) has played great for us this year," said Giuliano. "She deserves to get her first shutout." In the game played earlier in the day, UC Riverside earned a 1-0 triumph over Navy. The SDSU Tournament resumes Sunday at the Sports Deck, with UC Riverside and Davidson meeting at 11 a.m., followed by SDSU and Navy at 1:30 p.m.
