SDSU, UCSB Battle To Scoreless Tie In Women's Soccer

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The San Diego State women's soccer team and UC Santa Barbara played to a double overtime, 0-0 tie, on Sunday night in Santa Barbara, Calif. The Gauchos (5-4-1), who defeated No. 18 Arizona State, 3-0, on Friday, outshot the Aztecs (3-4-3), 15-10, for the game.

UCSB, which had 19 goals in nine games coming into the match, was held scoreless for only the second time this season.

"They (UCSB) were the best team we played this year," said first-year head coach Mike Giuliano. "We played amazing defense, particularly Noelle (Jouglet) who shut down their top scorer (Jennifer Borcich)."

Senior goalkeeper Sophia Perez (3-3-3), who made five saves, earned her fourth shutout of the season and improved her goals against average to 0.62.

Senior Jessica Korpela and, freshmen Tiphanie Elliott and Lisa Nielsen each had two shots to lead the SDSU offense. Ashley Cooper, Jessica Girdner, Jen Klunder and Gina Salinas contributed one shot apiece

"We had some good chances to score," added Giuliano. "We just couldn't put it away."

The Aztecs will travel to No. 18 Arizona State for its final road non-conference match of the season at 7 p.m. (MST) Friday, before playing host to fourth-ranked Washington on Sunday at the SDSU Sports Deck.

"We are really putting it together now," Giuliano said. "Our schedule is tough, but we will be ready for conference."
