MORAGA, Calif. - Saint Mary's substitute Derek Youpel scored two goals to lead the Gaels to a 2-1 victory over San Diego State Sunday afternoon. The loss sends the Aztecs to 1-6-1 and 1-2 on the current road trip. Saint Mary's improves to 2-2-3.

SDSU and Saint Mary's played a scoreless first half, despite numerous scoring chances for the Gaels. Early in the second half Youpel (57:10, 68:41) scored his first goal on a header just past Aztec keeper Tally Hall. The Aztecs evened up the match three minutes later on a header from Frank Caruso (59:58), getting assists from Kenny Fechner and Heath Creager. However, the equalizer would not hold up as Youpel sent in a left-footed shot from 18 yards out to close out the scoring.

SDSU got a strong performance from Hall, who had four saves, but the Aztec defense allowed Saint Mary's too many chances. The Gaels led in shots 9-8, and dominated in shots on goal 6-3 and corners 10-2.

The Aztecs complete their season-long four-game road trip with a 7 p.m. match Thursday against No. 7 New Mexico.
