Volleyball Drops Conference Opener at UNLV

LAS VEGAS - San Diego State suffered its 12th straight loss at it dropped its 2004 Mountain West Conference opener, 3-0 (25-30, 19-30, 21-30) to UNLV in Las Vegas Friday night. The win improved the Rebels to 6-4 overall and 1-0 in league play while the Aztecs drooped to 0-12 (0-1 MWC).

SDSU was led by Melissa Stapley, who recorded her sixth double-figure kill game of the year with 10. However, four UNLV players reached that same plateau, led by Lauren Miramontes and Mariana Pencheva with 14 and 13 respectively. Over the three games, the rebels had 57 kills to 31 by the Aztecs.

The match marked the return of senior outside hitter Kara Moriarty, who had not played since the season opener against Arizona on Sept. 1 when she suffered a pulled abdominal muscle. She finished the evening with nine kills, nine digs, two blocks and an assist.

Freshman Aime Cordeiro continued her stellar play at the libero position with 19 digs. It was the fourth match in the last five that she finished in double figures in that stat category.

Up next for the Aztecs is a return t Peterson Gym where they will face Wyoming on Friday (Oct. 1) at 7:00 p.m.
