LAS VEGAS - San Diego State's winless streak came to an end Wednesday night with a 2-0 win over UNLV in the conference opener for both teams. SDSU improves to 1-4-1 with the win, 1-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. UNLV drops to 1-4 and 0-1 in the MPSF.
The Aztecs jumped on the board early with a goal from junior forward Trey Meek (16:34), who sprinted past a Rebel defender and put in the shot from the right side of the box. Nick Clemens collected the first of two assists on the score.
SDSU continued its dominance in the second half, with Aztec defense allowing only one shot on goal. Eric Wohl capped off the scoring for the night with a goal (71:59) off a rebound from a corner kick. Clemens and Matt Couch notched assists on the play.
For the game, the Aztecs controlled the Rebel offense, forcing 18 of UNLV's 21 shots to miss the goal completely, while gaining eight shots on goal themselves, five by Meek.
"This game was a great victory for us," SDSU head coach Lev Kirshner said. "It was big for us to get the shutout and the league win."
Top players for the Aztecs included Meek, Clemens and Heath Creager.
"First off, let me say that the whole team had a great effort," Kirshner said. "Trey (Meek) was very dangerous for us tonight and Heath Creager did a fantastic job in a new position for him at midfielder. Nick Clemens also had an outstanding night, gaining two assists."
SDSU continues its season-longest four game road trip with a match at UC Davis, scheduled for 4 p.m.
