TEMPE, Ariz. - The Dartmouth College women's soccer team defeated San Diego State, 1-0, in the final game of the Sun Devil Invitational in Tempe, Ariz. on Sunday afternoon. The Big Green is now 3-1-2 on the season, while the Aztecs drop to 2-4-2 overall.
Sophomore Sarah Johnson tallied the game-winning goal in the 89th minute when she took a through ball from classmate Emily Tracy and fired the ball into the right side of the net.
After a scoreless first half, Dartmouth came out strong in the second session, outshooting the Aztecs, 14-2, and holding a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
SDSU had gone 288:38 without allowing a goal, its longest streak since 2003 when they made it 299:54 before giving up a goal in a 1-0 loss to UNLV in the quarterfinals of the Mountain West Conference tournament.
Senior goalkeeper Sophia Perez (2-3-2) started the game for SDSU and made six saves in 89:33. Freshman Melissa Deckers played the final 0:27 and did not face a shot.
Junior Alexis Solovij had two shots on goal to lead the Aztec offense. Senior Noelle Jouglet had two shots and senior Shannon McBride, junior Amanda McKay and freshmen Jessica Girdner and Lisa Nielsen contributed one shot apiece.
SDSU will travel for a non-conference match against Cal State Northridge at 1 p.m. Friday. The Aztecs next home game will be Oct. 3 against Washington at 1 p.m. (PST.) at the SDSU Sports Deck.
