The San Diego State men's soccer team played to the level of Michigan State Friday afternoon, but was unable to find the winning way in a 2-0 loss.
The game was physically controlled by SDSU, as the Aztecs won header after header. However, one player for the Spartans proved to be the difference as James Minagawa-Webster collected goals (9:32; 74:31) in both halves to provide the difference.
"I think it was a match where we made some progress," SDSU head coach Lev Kirshner said. "I thought it was a game where we played some good (soccer)."
For the match, MSU (5-0) held the advantage in shots 14-12, but the Aztecs (0-4) dominated play in the second half with an 8-5 advantage in shots, including three on goal. A few of the highlighted players for the Aztecs were midfielder Andrew DiCicco with four shots, forward Dione Scott and keeper Tally Hall.
"I felt Dione Scott was very good up top for us, helping keep possession," Kirshner said. "Tally Hall made four tremendous saves, and he is probably the man of the match for our team."
Other standout players for the Aztecs include forward Heath Creager and newcomer David Dally, who had two shots on goal in his first action of the year.
The Aztecs continue play in the 2004 SDSU/USD tournament Sunday at 2 p.m., against Dartmouth. The 2004 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation season starts Wednesday as SDSU travels to Las Vegas for a 7 p.m. match against UNLV.
