SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's golf team shot a 322 (+30) to stand in 17th place Monday after the first round of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M. Freshman Anna Booth (Coffs Harbour, Australia) and sophomore Jamie Oliver (Los Alamitos, Calif.) were the top Aztec finishers on the day, as they carded identical first-round scores of 79 (+6) at the par-73, 6,096-yard University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course.
Georgia, ranked No. 2 and No. 3 respectively in the national preseason polls, leads the field by five strokes with a five-under total of 287. Host No. 10/7 New Mexico follows with a first-round team score of 292, while No. 5 Oklahoma State and No. 18 Pepperdine are tied for third at 293.
The individual leader after the first 18 is Georgia's Kelly Froelich, who shot a five-under 68 to take a one-stroke lead over Brigham Young's Natalie Newren.
Oliver shot an even-par 37 on the final nine holes and her 79 is two strokes better than her first-round score at the same tournament a year ago. Booth, seeing her first action as an Aztec, had a team-best four birdies with three of those coming on her final six holes.
SDSU senior Veronica Ojeda (San Diego, Calif.) is tied for 81st at 81, while freshman Jackie Kazarian (Dana Point, Calif.) is tied for 89th (83). Senior Megan Mulhaupt (Trabuco Canyon, Calif.) rounds out the group with a first-round score of 86.
Play resumes Tuesday beginning at 8:30 a.m. for the second round of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational. The Aztec will tee-off between 8:30 and 9:10 a.m.
