SAN DIEGO - The San Diego women's soccer team defeated the San Diego State Aztecs Saturday night, 4-1. The host Toreros improved to 3-3 on the season, while the Aztecs dropped to 1-3-1.
San Diego outshot San Diego State for the game, 21-17, and held a 7-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Aztecs kept it close throughout and with 20 minutes to go, it was a one-goal game.
"I hate to say I'm happy after a 4-1 loss," said head coach Mike Giuliano, "but this is best that I've seen the team play. We were in it until the very end."
Freshman Amy Epsten tallied three goals for the Toreros, two off headers, to lead the San Diego offensive attack. Junior Michelle Rowe also had a goal, while seniors Brooke Roby and Marie-Claude Henry contributed one assist apiece.
The Aztecs, who were down, 2-0, at halftime, got on the scoreboard at the 56:05 mark when junior Amanda Swiader scored on a penalty kick.
Sophomore Jen Klunder led SDSU with eight shots, including three on goal. Freshmen Tiphanie Elliott and Ashley Young also had one shot on goal in the loss.
Junior Gricelda Alvarez, who made her first start as an Aztec goalkeeper, played all 90 minutes and made two saves.
San Diego State returns to action on Monday, playing host to Southern Utah at noon.
