EUGENE, Ore. - The San Diego State women's soccer team and Oregon played to a 1-1 double-overtime tie on Sunday afternoon. The Aztecs (0-1-1) outshot the Ducks (0-1-1), 12-9, in a close contest between two evenly matched teams.
Senior forward Gina Salinas tied the match at the 86:15 mark when she took her own deflected missed shot and put it low into the right corner from five yards out. Junior defender Alexis Solovij earned the assist on the play.
"We played with a lot of heart today," said first-year head coach Mike Giuliano. "Erica (Lopez) went down with an injury early and the other players really stepped it up."
Oregon put the first tally on the scoreboard 35:40 into the game off an indirect kick. Junior midfielder Caitlin Gamble took the pass from Carlie Ashcraft and chipped it into the left side of the net from seven yards out.
SDSU controlled most of the first half and held a 4-3 edge in shots. The Aztecs outshot the Ducks, 8-4, in the second half, but could not manage a shot in either overtime period.
Salinas and sophomore midfielder Jen Klunder had three shots apiece, and senior midfielder Jessica Kopela took two shots to lead the SDSU offense.
Senior goalkeeper Sophia Perez made four saves and faced nine shots in the match.
The Aztecs will make their 2004 home debut on Friday, Sept. 3, when they face Davidson at 3:30 p.m. at the SDSU Sports Deck. That contest is part of the SDSU Invitational, which will also have the Aztecs facing Navy on Sunday (Sept. 5) at 1:30 p.m.
