LOS ANGELES - In the final preseason action for both teams, UCLA scored three goals in the final 15 minutes of play to defeat San Diego State 4-1. SDSU gave UCLA everything it wanted for 93 minutes, but the depth of the Bruins proved to be too much for the Aztecs.
Leading a scant 1-0 on a goal in the 43rd minute, UCLA defender Mike Zaher lined a shot in from 16 yards out to open the floodgates for the Bruins, who scored two more goals in the next nine minutes of play, the final score coming at the 102 minute mark.
SDSU was held scoreless for 103 minutes before junior forward Heath Creager put the Aztecs on the board with a one-timer from 25 yards out, capping the scoring for the day.
"We were right in the middle of things for most of the game," head coach Lev Kirshner said. "But not having a full compliment of starters hurt our chances."
Among the bright spots in the scrimmage was the play of senior defender Kenny Fechner, who played the first half despite a shoulder injury that has limited him in preseason training. Kirshner also pointed out the play of defenders Eric Wohl and Freddy McDonald.
"Kenny (Fechner) played great for us for the first 45 minutes," Kirshner said. "Eric Wohl was also excellent for us in today's game and I was really impressed with the play of Freddy (McDonald) as a freshman."
The Aztecs next play when they open the 2004 season Sept. 1 at 4 p.m., entertaining No. 13 UC Santa Barbara at the SDSU Sports Deck.
