CORVALLIS, Ore. - The Oregon State Beavers defeated the San Diego State Aztecs women's soccer team in the season-opening game for both teams Friday, 1-0. The Aztecs fell to 9-7 all-time in season opening games.

The Aztecs controlled the ball and the offense for the majority of the first half, out-shooting Oregon State, 6-4. The Beavers countered with a strong second half, holding a 10-3 shot advantage.

Oregon State freshman Jodie Taylor scored the lone goal of the game at the 61:17 mark when her shot from 10 yards out beat SDSU goalkeeper Sophia Perez in the lower right corner. Freshman Monica Storm was credited with the assist.

"We had plenty of decent looks at the goal," said first-year Aztec head coach Mike Giuliano. "We just didn't finish our chances."

Sophomore Jen Klunder and freshman Tiphanie Elliott had two shots apiece to lead the SDSU offensive attack. Five others recorded one shot each.

Perez, a senior, registered seven saves in the loss. "Sophia (Perez) was amazing and really kept us in the game," Giuliano said.

"We played better than any of our scrimmages," Giuliano added. "We are looking forward to Oregon on Sunday."

The Aztecs next travel to Oregon at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Aztecs will make their 2004 home debut on Friday, Sept. 3, when they face Davidson at 1 p.m. at the SDSU Sports Deck. That contest is part of the SDSU Invitational, which will also have the Aztecs facing Navy on Sunday (Sept. 5) at 1:30 p.m.
