SAN DIEGO - SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State football team completed its second major scrimmage of fall camp Saturday afternoon with an 80-play workout at Qualcomm Stadium in front of an estimated 5,000 fans at Qualcomm Stadium.
"I thought it was a good afternoon with a lot of intensity," said third-year head coach Tom Craft. "We put the players into a lot of situational pressure. I also thought the defense showed a lot more intensity and focus today."
For the second straight scrimmage, quarterback newcomers Kevin O'Connell, a redshirt freshman, and true freshman Darren Mougey, played well.
"I think the quarterbacks are doing a nice job considering all of the shuffling going on up front with the offensive line," Craft said. "We aren't going to name a starting quarterback for a while and I'm very comfortable with that."
O'Connell was 6-of-14 passing for 119 yards with a touchdown. He also ran for a 17-yard score, the only rushing touchdown of the day for the Aztecs. That run completed a 67-yard scoring drive that included a 47-yard pass to Devin Pitts.
Mougey was 11-of-15 for 70 yards through the air. He also had an 11-yard rush and engineered a 60-yard scoring drive that ended with a 27-yard field-goal by Garrett Palmer.
On the day, Craft saw his squad spread the action around throughout the squad. Eleven players were credited with rushes and 13 receivers caught passes from four different quarterbacks.
Alex Thompson's 51 yards on three carries led the squad. As a team, SDSU passed for 265 yards on 24 completions. Devin Pitts led in receiving yards with 60 yards while Brett Swain had six catches to lead the team. Jeff Webb, Robert Ortiz and Kevin Conerly all caught touchdown passes. The longest scoring play was Conerly's 30-yard grab came from Matt Dlugolecki.
After not forcing a turnover in the first scrimmage, The Dark Side came up with four on Saturday, keyed by interceptions by Josh Dean, Hubert Caliste and Brett Sturm.
The defense allowed one yard or less on eight of the team's 31 rushing attempts.
