SAN DIEGO - As construction continues on the new softball and tennis complex, fans can see the progress. The project, scheduled for a fall 2004 opening, is on schedule and will continue San Diego State's tradition of having some of the finest athletic facilities in California.
The softball facility has made the most visible improvements as of late, with permanent lighting and turf going in. The facility, which includes 300 permanent seats and the room to seat 1,000, had turf installed in July, and on Tuesday, had lighting installed.
The tennis complex, which features 12 fully-lighted courts and two viewing platforms, is also making great progress. The court sites were recently laid out and marked with construction going on in tandem with the softball stadium.
The facilities will share a new lighted parking lot that features a new connection to 55th Street. The entire project was funded primarily by a $6.5 million donation from John and Becky Moores, owners of the San Diego Padres.
