SAN DIEGO - When the 2004 San Diego State coaching staff said they got a big pickup in Robert Nelson, many Aztec fans had no idea just how big. At 6 feet and 10 inches tall, Nelson stands to be the largest player to ever put on the pads for SDSU and possibly the largest in America this season.

The Gilbert, Ariz native is a relative newcomer to the sport of football with just three years of playing experience. The lack of field time does not mean a lack of talent, however. Nelson is a martial arts expert, which helped him with a summer job as a bouncer. An agile athlete, with speed and smarts, Nelson turned down scholarship offers for volleyball and plans to pursue a degree in computer science. He visited with goaztecs.com during the first week of football camp.

Robert Nelson on...

Why would someone who is 6 foot 10 inches and 350 pounds need a martial arts background?

I wasn't always 6'10". My mom got me into it when I was 10-years-old. My family is Korean, so it is tradition. I stuck with it for about nine years and then decided to try something else.

How did being a bouncer compare to playing football?

I didn't really do it that long. It is about the same pace, but it still is a bit of the intimidation factor. No one really wants to mess with a 6'10" guy.

What was the last book you read?

Prey by Michael Crichton.

How did San Diego State get you here?

Coach (Brian) Stark came down and discussed the community. He told me about Coach (Damon) Baldwin, his background and what he has done for his linemen. He really sold me on the school and the program.

And how do you feel about San Diego?

It is really nice, and it is a lot cooler than Arizona.

What is your favorite food?

I am a steak guy. Steak and potatoes.

What album is in your CD player?

Velvet Revolver, it is the latest one out.

Who would play you in a movie about San Diego State football?

The Big Show, the Giant from WWE.

Cats or Dogs?

Dogs. I don't like cats, I'm allergic to them.

What is your career highlight?

My last game at Scottsdale Community College. It was probably the best game of my life.

What is your favorite sports moment?

Scottsdale was down by two points or so to one of the best teams in the community colleges. We were on the 5-yard line with one second left and we kicked a field goal to win the game.

What are your expectations of the 2004 team?

I am hoping we do good. We will see what happens. I would like to see us go all the way.

What do you think about the Aztec coaching staff?

They are all awesome and really know what they are talking about.

Thoughts on your first week of practice?

There is a lot to get down and I am hoping I can step up.
