SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Former San Diego State great Miesha McKelvy-Jones earned a spot in Sunday's 100-meter hurdle semifinal with a time of 12.88 seconds in the preliminary heat Saturday afternoon at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track and Field Team Trials in Sacramento, Calif. The semifinal is set to begin at 3:15 p.m., with the final scheduled for 5:25 p.m. that same day.
McKelvy-Jones, a three-time USA outdoor runner-up in the 100 hurdles, took second in her heat behind nine-time U.S. Outdoor Champion and American record-holder Gail Devers (12.79) and is seeded sixth for the semifinals. Nike teammate Joanna Hayes posted the fastest preliminary time of 12.67.
A 1999 SDSU graduate, McKelvy-Jones will have to place in the top-four in her heat to make the finals. She came into the event ranked second in the event with an "A" standard time of 12.51.
Four-time Aztec All-American Tonette Dyer finished 14th in the 200 semifinals, ending her chance at a 2004 Olympic bid. Dyer took fourth in her heat and 14th overall in 23.50, 0.50 seconds from a qualifying spot in the finals.
Former San Diego State standout Marla Runyan, who already made the Olympic Team in the 5,000 meters, will run in the 1,500 final on Sunday. Runyan ran 4:09.74 in the semifinal heat on Friday for the day's fastest time. An eighth-pace finisher in the 1,500 at the 2000 Olympic Games, she will need to finish in the top-three to make her second consecutive Olympic Team at the 1,500-meter distance.
