SACRAMENTO, Calif. - - Former San Diego State standout Marla Runyan ran the fastest semifinal time in the 1,500-meter run of 4 minutes, 9.63 seconds Friday evening at the 2004 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Team Trials in Sacramento, Calif. Runyan now advances to the finals, which will be held on Sun., July 18, in an attempt to qualify for her second event at the 2004 Olympics.
Runyan, who made the Olympic Team in the 5,000 meters on Monday with a second-place time of 15:07.48, edged out Nike teammate Suzy Favor-Hamilton (4:09.74) for the day's fastest time by less than a second. The pair will be joined by 13 others in Sunday's final heat, slated for 5 p.m.
Four-time SDSU All-American Tonette Dyer advanced to the semifinal of the 200 meters with a time of 23.42 in the quarterfinal-heat. Dyer took second in her heat behind Connie Moore (52.13) and is seeded eighth for the semifinals. Torri Edwards, who already qualified for the Olympics in the 100 meters last Saturday, posted the fastest quarterfinal time with 22.60 clocking.
With her top-18 finish, Dyer advances to Saturday's semifinals, beginning at 2:02 p.m. She will have to place in the top eight to make the finals, which are scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
