Aztec Lightweights Struggle in Deep Field at IRA Championships

June 4, 2004

CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The San Diego State lightweight eight boat, ranked No. 10 nationally in the final USRowing regular-season poll, had identical fifth-place showings in Friday morning's trial heat and the afternoon's repechage heat at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) championships. This is the first showing at the IRA championships for an SDSU women's crew boat since the 2000 lightweight boat placed fifth overall.

The Aztecs will compete in the petite final at 2:12 p.m. EDT on Saturday to set the placings of 7th-12th.

"We're excited to be here and finally get back to the national championship for lightweight rowing," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "In tomorrow's petite final, our goal is to keep or gain on our national ranking of 10th.

"In this morning's race, since only the first-place boat moved on to the final, every boat shut down if they knew they would not finish in the top spot in order to save energy for the afternoon's racing," Zebroski said. "This afternoon we had a really fast heat, but were comparable to the other crews at the halfway mark before losing some steam going into the second 1000 meters, where we got a little rushed instead of rowing relaxed and fluid.

"The experience this weekend will give the team the experience and jitters of racing in a national championship under their belt so we'll be able to improve next year," Zebroski said. "Everybody on the boat is returning except for senior Stephanie Snaman."

Saturday's petite final completes the 2003-04 season for the SDSU women's crew team, along with Zebroski's inaugural campaign as head coach.
