SAN DIEGO - San Diego State first baseman Rielly Embrey (Poway, Calif./Poway High School) has been awarded an NCAA postgraduate scholarship in the amount of $7500, one of 58 scholarships presented to 29 men and 29 women who participated in spring sports (all divisions) during the 2003-2004 academic year.
To qualify for an NCAA postgraduate scholarship, a student-athlete must have an overall grade-point average of 3.200 (on a 4.000 scale) or its equivalent and must have performed with distinction as a member of the varsity team in the sport in which the student-athlete was nominated. The student-athlete must have behaved, both on and off the field, in a manner that has brought credit to the student-athlete, the institution and intercollegiate athletics. The student-athlete also must intend to continue academic work beyond the baccalaureate degree as a full-time or part time graduate student.
Embrey graduated from SDSU last month with a four-year cumulative grade point average of 3.98 in kinesiology. This past season, he hit .353 overall with 19 doubles and a team-leading 57 RBI as he was named the Aztec MVP. In league play, he also batted .390 and was the team leader in both doubles and RBI.
In addition to being named to the All-Mountain West Conference team, he was selected a first-team Academic All-American. He earned league player of the week honors during the season and was also named to the all-tournament team at the MWC Championship tourney.
Embrey was drafted by the San Diego Padres in the 23rd round of the annual first-year player draft earlier this month, and he is currently playing with the Class A Eugene Emeralds in the Northwest League.
