Embrey Named First-Team Academic All-American

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State first baseman Rielly Embrey, a senior from Poway High School in Poway, Calif., has been named to the first team Academic All-America squad as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Last month he was named to the Academic All-District VIII Baseball Team for the second consecutive year.

During his four years at SDSU, Embrey has a cumulative grade point average of 3.98 as a kinesiology major. He has been a member of the Mountain West All-Academic team each of the past three seasons and is a four-time winner of SDSU's Malik Award, which honors the Aztec student-athlete with the highest gpa.

Earlier this season he was named the National Hitter of the Week for his performance in the series against Air Force. He was also honored as the MWC Player of the Week, an award he captured for the third time during his collegiate career.

Embrey finished the 2004 season with a .353 batting average and led the team with 57 runs batted in. He had 19 doubles, a triple and five home runs including a grand slam. In league play, he hit.390 with 30 runs, 14 doubles and 36 RBI in 28 MWC contests.

San Diego recently concluded its 2004 campaign with an overall record of 35-29, winning the regular-season Mountain West Conference title in the process.
