SDSU Track & Field's Nicole Ireland Earns Academic All-District Honors

June 2, 2004

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State track and field senior and five-time All-American Nicole Ireland (Las Vegas, Nev.) has been named to the 2004 academic all-district VIII second team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Ireland, who owns a 3.36 cumulative grade-point average in mathematics, automatically qualified for this month's NCAA championships in the 400 hurdles and will also run a leg on the team's 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Ireland has garnered athletic All-America honors in the 400 hurdles each of the last three years with a fourth-place finish in 2003, and 10th and 11th place performances the previous two seasons.

Ireland ranks seventh nationally in the 400 hurdles in 2004 and has earned the Mountain West Conference outdoor championships' high-point award in each of her two seasons at SDSU after transferring from the University of Alabama.

Ireland was joined on the second team by 11 other student-athletes, while the first team had 10 members with an average GPA of over 3.95. The first-team members advance to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration, which will be announced on June 24.
