STANFORD, Calif. - San Diego State shot a 15-over par 303 in the second round of the NCAA west regional on Friday at the Stanford Golf Course and enters Saturday's final 18-holes in 13th place with a total of 613. The Aztecs are stil in the hunt for their first-ever trip to the NCAA Championships as the top eight teams advance. SDSU currently sits seven strokes out of the final qualifying position, and 12 strokes out of fourth. The Aztecs shot the eighth best round of the day on Friday after shaving seven strokes off of their first round score. This is SDSU's third trip to NCAA regionals, and its first since 2001.
SDSU was again led by junior Heather MacRae who fired a one-under 71 on Friday. MacRae is at two-over par 146 after shooting a 75 in the first round and is in 12th place invidually.
The top two individuals from teams that don't qualify for nationals also advance to the NCAA Championships. Heading into the final round MacRae is one-stroke behind the top two individuals that are not on one of the top eight teams.
MacRae is trying to become the first Aztec to qualify for nationals as an individual. Hiroko Fukushima is SDSU's top finisher in NCAA regional action as she placed 18th in 1999. No other Aztec has placed in the top 30 in NCAA competition.
Jenna Wilson rebounded from a subpar first day to shoot an even par 72. Wilson is in 26th place after opening with a 78 for a 150 total. Wilson had only one birdie and one bogey on Friday in a very steady round.
Shayna Miyajima shot 78 on Friday for a two-day total of 155, which puts her in 54th place. Toni Lutz recorded SDSU last score by shooting 82, while Sandy Kim posted an 83.
