May 28, 2004

Box Score

LAS VEGAS - UNLV came out swinging Friday afternoon, scoring eight runs over the second and third innings en route to 13-3 win over San Diego State at the Mountain West Conference Tournament in Las Vegas. With the win, the Rebels improved to 36-22 on the year as they move into Saturday's championship game.

The Aztecs, who lost for the first time in seven games, fell to 34-28 and must come back Friday night to face New Mexico in a elimination contest. The winner of that game will have to defeat UNLV twice on Saturday to claim the MWC championship and gain the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Regionals.

SDSU starter Daryl Harang was tagged for the Rebels' first six runs as he took the loss to even his record at 6-6.

UNLV's David Seccombe went seven innings to pick up the win and improve to 9-2. He gave up nine hits, but consistently frustrated the Aztecs, who left 10 men on base over the first six innings and a total of 12 for the game. Two of SDSU's three runs were of the unearned variety as Seccombe struck out eight while walking only two.

Rielly Embrey led San Diego State with three hits and a run batted in while James Guerrero (single, double) and Brock Ungricht (two singles) had a pair of hits apiece.
