SUNRIVER, Ore. - The San Diego State men's golf team is in a familiar spot entering Saturday's final round of NCAA West Regional play in Sunriver, Ore., in a fight for a bid to the national championship tournament.
The Aztecs followed up Thursday's opening-round 1-under-par 287 with a 296 on Friday and are tied with Washington for ninth place entering Saturday's final 18 holes. The top 10 teams in the 27-team field advance to the NCAA Division I Men's Championship tournament. Last year, SDSU survived life on the edge to advance to the NCAA Championships and two years ago the Aztecs lost a bid to the national tournament in a playoff.
New Mexico leads the team race with a 6-under-par 570 total. The Aztecs, while in the precarious position of ninth place, are just five shots out of sixth place and eight shots out of third place.
San Diego State freshman Aaron Goldberg shot a 73 on Friday after firing a 69 in the opening round. He is still SDSU's individual leader with two-day total of 142 and is 13th in the medalist race.
