Aztec Crew Has One Second and Two Thirds at PCRCs

May 15, 2004

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - The San Diego State women's crew team saw its lightweight eight boat finish second and its varsity four and novice four boats each place third at Saturday's Pacific Coast Rowing Championships.

In the four-boat lightweight eight final, Stanford's "A" boat (7:04.3) outraced San Diego State (7:23.2), while California (7:28.1) and Stanford "B" (7:36.5) finished third and fourth, respectively.

"The lightweight boat remained in the same finish position as last year (silver medal)," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "Now they're gearing up to gain some seconds on Stanford for the last race, the IRAs (Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships from June 3-5 in Camden, N.J.)."

The varsity four boat finished third in the open four final with a time of 7:55.8, trailing Seattle Pacific (7:45.1), Saint Mary's (7:49.3) and ahead of UC Santa Barbara (7:58.3), USC (8:05.4) and Oregon (8:07.0). The Aztec boat placed second in its seven-boat heat to advance to the final as the top three teams moved on.

"The varsity four had a very comfortable heat," Zebroski said. "They maintained a lower stroke rate to the finish, holding back because (by that point) they knew they were going to advance to the final. I'm happy with the bronze-medal finish. The boat only practiced three times and had two solid races today."

The novice four boat also placed third in its final, crossing the line in 8:03.1, trailing California "A" (7:51.8), California "B" (7:59.9) and placing higher than Sacramento State (8:11.2), UCLA (8:23.6) and Saint Mary's (8:29.9). The Aztecs finished second in their five-boat heat in which two boats advanced to the final.

"I'm pleased with their (novice four members') attitudes and chemistry," Zebroski said. "They bonded quickly and were excited to race today. They had practiced twice before."

The Aztecs remain in Sacramento, Calif., for Sunday's Pac-10 Championships. San Diego State will send its varsity eight, junior varsity eight and novice eight boats. Following Sunday's action, the entire women's crew team will have seen its conclusion with the exception of the lightweight eight boat, which will participate in the IRAs in Camden, N.J., from June 3-5.

"I hope we have a good last race," Zebroski said. "It (the Pac-10 Championships) will be a competitive event with strong crews and it will be nice to see where we stack up and find out where we need to go next year."
