SAN DIEGO - San Diego State sent 12 men to the plate, scoring seven times in the fifth inning to turn a two-run lead into a nine-run advantage as it went on to defeat Brigham Young, 11-8, Thursday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium. That inning was highlighted by a two-run homer by Kyle Floquet, RBI doubles by Josh Hill and Rielly Embrey, and a run-scoring triple by James Guerrero.
After both teams opened the game with single makers in the first, the Aztecs (29-27; 15-9 MWC) tallied three times in the bottom of the third. Consecutive singles by Landon Burt, Guerrero and Embrey loaded the bases for a two-run single by Brock Ungricht. Two batters later, an RBI single by Josh Hill made it a 4-1 SDSU lead.
After giving up the single run on three hits in the first, San Diego State starter Daryl Harang retired 12 of the next 13 Cougars he faced before giving up a second run in the fifth. Harang went 6.1 innings, allowing a pair of runs on five hits and striking out nine as he evened his record at 5-5.
Trailing 11-2 after five innings, the visitors fought back in the top of the seventh when Harang was lifted with one out in favor of reliever Joey Pace. The Cougars took advantage of the pitching change to score five times (three earned) off the Aztec senior before lefty Drew Jenson retired the side.
Brigham Young (22-27, 12-11 MWC) added one more run in the eighth on a solo homer by Jeff Hiestand before SDSU closer Ryan Schroyer was called upon to pitch the final inning. Schroyer closed out the game by retiring the three batters he faced, two on strikeouts as he notched his 12th save.
BYU starter Nick Lemon, who gave up six runs in his four innings of work, took the loss to fall to 2-4 on the year.
Eleven of San Diego State's 15 hits on the evening came from the first four batters in the lineup with Guerrero (three runs scored), Embrey (two doubles) and Ungricht (three RBI) reaching safely three times apiece. Landon Burt added a pair of singles, scored twice and walked twice.
The Aztecs and Cougars conclude their three-game series Friday evening (May 14) at 6:00 p.m. It will be Senior Night at Tony Gwynn Stadium as the Aztecs bid farewell to 14 athletes playing their final home game for the red and Black.
In addition, it will be Trading Card Night with the first 40 fans receiving a set of 2004 SDSU baseball cards featuring current Aztec players and coaches
