The San Diego State track and field squad is in fourth, 10th and 14th after day one of the heptathlon Wednesday at the 2004 Mountain West Conference Track & Field Championships in Las Vegas, Nev. Aztec freshman Janine Polischuk (Regina, Saskatchewan) is currently fourth after four events with 3,000 points at UNLV's Myron Partridge Stadium and Sheila Tarr Smith Field.

Polischuk is joined in the event by teammates Jamillah Titus (American Canyon, Calif.), who is 10th with 2,607 points, and Nicole Carmier (Elk Grove, Calif.), who is 14th with 2,428 points. This is Titus' first-ever career heptathlon, while it is just the second for Carmier, who placed eighth at the same meet a year ago.

Polischuk tied for the day's fastest time in the 100 hurdles of 14.33 and was second in the 200 meters (25.43). After clearing 4-10.50 in the high jump (13th), she rebounded with a season-best throw of 36-9.75 in the shot put (4th).

Titus was third in the high jump (5-5.75) and the 200 meters (25.95), but struggled in the 100 hurdles (16th - 17.72) and the shot put (10th - 29-09.50). Carmier, meanwhile, tied for 10th in the high jump (5-1.00) and was 11th in the 200 meters (26.63).

UNLV's Christine Spence leads the event with 3,297 points, while BYU's Anna-Lee Walcott (3,149 pts.) and Liis Berendsen (3,044) are second and third, respectively.

The heptathlon concludes Thursday beginning at 9:30 a.m. PDT with the final three events, the long jump, javelin and the 800 meters.
