SAN DIEGO - Brigham Young scored eight runs in the second inning and cruised to an 11-2 victory over San Diego State in the first contest of their three-game series Wednesday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium. The Cougars had nine straight batters reach safely on a walk, seven hits and an SDSU error as they handed Aztec starter Scott Shoemaker (8-6) his first loss since March 5.
The win improved BYU to 22-26 overall and 12-10 in the Mountain West Conference as it moved to within a game-and-half of the third-place Aztecs. SDSU dropped to 28-27 (14-9 MWC).
San Diego State found itself behind 10-0 before it got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on a two-run double by Curt Mendoza that scored Chad Corona and Jordan Swaydan, who had singled and walked ahead of him.
Cougar starter Patrick Wells (6-4) kept the SDSU offense off balance all evening, allowing just the two runs on five hits and striking out six over seven innings to record the win.
Beside Mendoza, the only other SDSU players to hit safely on the night were Landon Burt (single, triple) and Chad Corona (single, double).
BYU shortstop Ranger Wiens led the BYU offense with four hits and three runs batted in. while first baseman Tim Law collected three hits and scored twice.
The Aztecs and Cougars continue their conference series Thursday evening (May 13) at Tony Gwynn Stadium with game time set for 6:00 p.m.
