SAN DIEGO - San Diego State was one of 81 teams selected to play in the 2004 NCAA men's golf tournament it was announced today. The Aztecs will travel to Sunriver, Ore. to play in the West Regional tournament at the Crosswater Club on May 20-22.
SDSU is making its sixth straight trip to the NCAA tournament and its 30th appearance in the program's history. The Aztecs have made the NCAAs nine times since the competition was expanded to include regional tournaments in 1989. SDSU will try and advance to its second straight NCAA Championship as the top 10 teams in the regional tournament advance to the finals, which will be played at the Meadows Golf Course in Hot Springs, Va. on June 1-4.
The Aztecs have made the NCAA Championships two times in the last six years but have not made back-to-back trips to the finals since 1983-84. In 2003, SDSU advanced to the championship by recording a ninth-place finish after shooting 885. The Aztecs were barely edged out of a championship bid in 2002 when Texas Tech defeated SDSU in a playoff after the two teams tied for 10th by shooting 882.
Senior Mark Warman has posted top-20 finishes in each of the last two NCAA regional tournaments. Warman placed eighth in 2002 to earn one of the two individual bids to the NCAA Championships and finished 16th a year ago. Warman is coming off of a second-place finish in the MWC tournament, where he shot nine-under par 209.
The NCAA regional is a three-day tournament with 18-holes played each day. SDSU enters the competition as the No. 15 team in the field and the 37th-ranked team in the country, according to Golfweek/Sagarin.
