SAN DIEGO - Sophomore Dita Hauerlandova, senior Katalina Romero and freshman Alesya Vidov won singles and doubles matches for San Diego State as the Aztecs women's tennis team claimed a 6-1 victory over Colorado State on Friday afternoon at the SDSU Courts.
SDSU, ranked 69th nationally, improved to 6-12 overall and 2-2 in Mountain West Conference play, while the Rams fell to 10-7 overall and 2-2 in league play.
The Aztecs won two of the three doubles matches to claim the team point. The 31st-ranked duo of Romero and Indra Erichsen were victorious at number one doubles. The Aztec pair posted an 8-2 victory over Colorado State's Dasha Zhurin and Emily Kirchem. SDSU clinched the team point following a win by Hauerlandova and Vidov at number two.
San Diego State clinched the match with three straight set victories in singles play. Hauerlandova and Romero dropped just six games between them in claiming victories at the top positions. At one, Hauerlandova was a 6-3, 6-0 winner over Zhurin, while at number two; Romero recorded a 6-2, 6-1 victory against Kirchem. SDSU went up 4-0 when Vidov won 6-3, 6-1 at number four.
The Rams' Carla Pallares lost the first set, but rallied to win a second set and recorded a victory when her opponent retired to give Colorado State its first point of the match. The Aztecs responded by taking the final two matches in three sets. Patricia Graf was a 6-4, 2-6, 10-5 winner at five and Sarah Sansom closed out the match with a 6-7, 6-4, 10-6 win at six.
San Diego State will be back in action tomorrow when the Aztecs play host to Wyoming. Match time is set for 10 a.m. PDT at the SDSU Courts.
