SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State women's track and field team earned its second consecutive title and its third in the last four years, as the Aztecs won the 2004 California-Nevada State Championships Sunday in San Luis Obispo, Calif. SDSU beat out 19 other squads with 167 total points, including its closest contenders, second place Cal State Northridge (119 pts.) and third place Nevada (113 pts.)
Aztec head coach Rahn Sheffield was also named the women's coach of the meet for the third time in the last four years, while Cal State Los Angeles' Sarah Bouchard and Nevada's Caira Hane were named female track athlete and field athlete of the meet, respectively.
San Diego State claimed seven event titles overall, including six in the meet's second and final day.
Senior All-American Tonette Dyer (Shreveport, La.) once again led the way as the team's only individual double-event winner, sweeping the 100 and 200-meter races. Dyer logged a school record effort of 11.42, a time that ranks No. 2 nationally, in winning the 100, beating her own record of 11.43 set earlier this season. Later in the day, Dyer ran a wind-aided time of 23.24 en route to another first-place finish in the 200 meters.
Junior Marie Nilsson (Kil, Sweden) also set an SDSU school record on Sunday, coming up victorious in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:23.34, beating the previous record she set at the 2004 Aztec Classic of 10.32.2. The time is an NCAA regional qualifying effort, ranks No. 2 nationally in 2004, and was a meet record by more than 40 seconds.
Other Aztecs to win events included sophomore transfer Larnie Boyd (Vallejo, Calif.), who claimed the 400 meters in 54.89, junior Heather Heron (Yakima, Wash.), who won the 100 hurdles in 13.40 (wind-aided), and the 4x100 relay, which crossed the line first in an NCAA regional qualifying effort of 45.30.
SDSU next heads to the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn., April 9-10.
