Aztecs Move To Top Of MWC Standings With 8-4 Victory Over UNLV

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State put runs on the board in each of the first four innings en route to an 8-4 win over UNLV at Tony Gwynn Stadium Saturday afternoon. It was the Aztecs' second straight win over the Rebels as they moved past the visitors into first place in the Mountain West Conference.

The victory, SDSU's fourth in a row and eighth in its last nine outings, improveded the Aztecs to 18-18 on the year and 7-1 in league play. UNLV slipped to 19-10 overall (6-2 MWC).

San Diego State jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in its first at bat on a double by shortstop James Guerrero, RBI single by Rielly Embrey, and a two-run homer from Jake McLintock, his second of the season.

SDSU added single runs in the second, third and fourth, getting RBIs from Landon Burt (sac fly), Brock Ungricht (double) and Guerrero (single).

Leading 6-2 after six innings, SDSU saw the visitors close the gap to two runs with a pair in the top of the seventh on a two-run homer by left fielder Andrew D'Angelo. But SDSU answered right back with two of their own in the bottom of the inning, with Rielly Embrey scoring on a single by Jordan Swaydan, and Ungricht coming home from third on a pickoff attempt by Rebel hurler Ben Scheinbaum that got by first baseman Chris Bonnell, who was holding Swaydan on base.

Senior lefty Daryl Harang (2-4) went five innings to record his second win of the year. Along the way he allowed a pair of runs on five hits while striking out six. Ben Coon added three solid innings of relief with senior Ryan Schroyer pitching a perfect ninth to preserve the victory.

SDSU's Brock Ungricht finished the afternoon with his second three-hit game of the series, scoring twice and driving in a run. Rielly Embrey also contributed three hits and scored twice. All nine Aztec starters recorded at least one hit.

San Diego State and UNLV conclude their three-game series on Sunday (April 4) with game time set for noon at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
