April 26, 2004

SAN DIEGO - San Diego State was one of 63 teams selected to play in the 2004 NCAA women's golf tournament it was announced today. The Aztecs will travel to Stanford, Calif. to play in the West Regional tournament at the Stanford Golf Course on May 6-8.

SDSU is making its third all-time trip to the NCAA tournament but its first since 2001 and are seeking to advance beyond the regional round for the first time in program history. The Aztecs are ranked No. 42 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings after placing fourth at last week's MWC championships.

The NCAA tournament consists of three regional tournaments with 21 teams competing at each site. The top eight teams at each regional advance to the NCAA finals, which will be played at the Grand National Lake Course in Auburn, Alabama on May 18-21.

The Aztecs' last trip to the NCAA's came in 2001 at the East regional tournament in Chapel Hill, N.C., where weather forced SDSU to miss the last round of action. Seniors Shayna Miyajima and Sandy Kim were freshman on the 2001 team and look to come away with a better result this season, with the help of All-Mountain West Conference selection freshman Jenna Wilson and newcomer junior Heather MacRae. Sophomore Toni Lutz, who fired a career best 226 at the MWC Championships, will round out the Aztec starting five.

SDSU earned their first win in three years this past fall when they set a school scoring record by shooting 878 to win the Lady Aztec Invitational. SDSU has also recorded two runner-up finishes and finished in the top four in each of its last four tournaments.
