SAN DIEGO - Utah scored four times after batting around in the third inning and added three more in the fourth as it cruised to a 9-4 win over San Diego State at Tony Gwynn Stadium Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Utes captured two of the three weekend games against the Aztecs, improving to 12-23 overall and 5-10 in the Mountain West Conference. The loss was the fourth in the last six outings for SDSU, which fell to 21-24 (10-6 MWC).
San Diego took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first as Rielly Embrey's single brought home Landon Burt from second base. However, it was all Utah from that point.
Over the third and fourth innings, the visitors scored seven times off SDSU starter Ben Coon, who took the loss to fall to 4-2 on the year. In those two outbursts, the Utes got two RBIs apiece from center fielder Matt Ciaramella and left fielder John Welsh.
Utes starter Ben Buck (3-2), who picked up the win in Saturday's contest as well, held the SDSU offense in check until the sixth inning. The Aztecs scored twice in that inning on RBI singles by Curt Mendoza and Jake McLintock, and had the bases loaded with one out looking for more. But Utah brought on Travis Kohn, who induced a pair of pop-ups to end the threat.
The teams traded solo home runs in the seventh, with Utah's Ryan Khoury and SDSU's Rielly Embrey clearing the fences in left and right respectively. From there, Ute closer Clay Westmoreland came on to toss the final 2.2 innings to record his sixth save of the season.
Left fielder Josh Hill led the Aztec offense with three hits, a walk and run scored while teammate Rielly Embrey had a pair of hits with two runs batted in.
San Diego State will now take a brief break from league play when it hosts Loyola Marymount on Tuesday, April 27, at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
