PROVO, UTAH - San Diego State took out its frustration over Thursday's extra-inning loss by recording double digits in runs and hits in a 10-6 win over Brigham Young Friday evening at Larry H. Miller Field in Provo, Utah. The victory pulled the Aztecs to within a game of the .500 mark at 20-21 as they improved to 9-3 in Mountain West Conference play. BYU fell to 15-25 (5-9 MWC) in a contest played before 2,505 fans, the fifth-largest crowd in school history.
SDSU jumped on top in its first at bat, scoring three times in the first inning on three hits and three walks with RBIs by Jake McLintock and Clay Coulter. The visitors added seven runs over the next four innings as they ran out to a 10-1 lead after five.
The Aztec offense was led by first baseman Rielly Embrey, who had three hits with a double, three runs scored and a pair of RBI. Center fielder David Hall also had three hits and two runs batted in while McLintock had two hits and two RBI.
Meanwhile, San Diego State senior Daryl Harang (3-4) was holding the Cougar offense in check in impressive style. After allowing a run on two hits in the opening frame, Harang retired 15 straight batters until giving up a two-out walk in the sixth. Included in that run was a three-pitch inning in the fourth as he retired the three batters he faced on one pitch apiece.
BYU finally got to the Aztec lefty in the seventh as it got a pair of walks and two singles to chase him from the game. Harang departed with two on and two out, and SDSU leading 10-3. However, that lead was quickly reduced when Ryan Chambers hit the first pitch from reliever Joey Pace over the right field fence for a three-run homer to make it a 10-6 game.
Senior closer Ryan Schroyer came on to start the eighth inning and finished out the contest by facing seven hitters and allowing just a walk.
Brigham Young's Nick Lemon, making his first start of the year, took the loss to fall to 1-3.
The Aztecs and Cougars conclude their three-game series on Saturday with a single-game slated to start at noon (MDT).
