April 15, 2004

Box Score

PROVO, UTAH - Brandon Taylor's one-out double in the bottom of the 11th inning scored Wade Vest from second base as Brigham Young defeated San Diego State, 7-6, at Larry H. Miller field in Provo, Utah. The Cougars had rallied from a 6-4 deficit with a pair of runs in the seventh to send the game into extra frames as they improved to 15-24 overall and 5-8 in Mountain West Conference play. The loss dropped SDSU to 19-21 on the season (8-3 MWC).

The winning run was of the unearned variety as Vest reached first on a throwing error by pitcher Drew Jenson. He was then sacrificed to second before scoring on Taylor's hit.

Jenson, who went 4.1 innings in relief of starter Scott Shoemaker, suffered the loss to fall to 0-1. BYU reliever Paul Jacinto (1-8) picked up his first victory of the year after going the final 5.2 innings.

San Diego State jumped out to a 2-0 lead with runs in the first and third, provided courtesy of RBI singles by Brock Ungricht in each inning. However, the Aztecs gave those runs back with errors in both the third and fourth that led to both runs being unearned.

After the home team went ahead 4-2, SDSU scored three times in the fifth to regain the advantage. The big blow in the inning was a two-run homer by third baseman Chad Corona, his fourth of the season.

Jake McLintock's RBI single in the top of the seventh gave SDSU a 6-4 lead before BYU tallied twice to send the game into extra innings. The Aztecs had a chance to score in the top of the 10th, putting runners on first and third with one out, but Jacinto then retired Kyle Floquet and David Hall on called third strikes to end the threat.

McLintock ended the evening with four hits including a pair of doubles while Ungricht had three hits with a double and two RBI.

San Diego State and Brigham Young continue their three-game series on Friday, April 16, with game time set for 7:00 pm. (MDT).
