SDSU Crew Competes at City Championships
* The San Diego State women's crew team competes with the other two San Diego-area collegiate rowing programs, the University of San Diego and UC San Diego, at the San Diego City Championships from 6-8 a.m. on April 17. The racing will take place in West Bay at Mission Bay. Spectators can watch from the Mission Bay Aquatic Center (1001 Santa Clara Point). Throughout the competition, San Diego State will use the white oars with red and black stripes. USD will use blue oars with a white stripe and UCSD will compete with yellow oars.
Lysen's Dedication Pays Off
* A freshman from Holy Names Academy in Seattle, Wash., Mia Lysen has risen to a seat on the varsity eight boat.
* "Mia is a first-year rower at San Diego State who rowed for four years with Holy Names Academy," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said. "She is an excellent athlete and one of the most coachable student-athletes I have worked with at San Diego State. She is extremely dedicated to her team and the sport. Her positive attitude and work ethic landed her a spot in a seat of the varsity eight for this race (the San Diego City Championships). I am excited to see Mia progress the next three years."
Recapping the San Diego Crew Classic
* The Aztec lightweight boat finished sixth in the grand final (the championship competition for the A.W. Coggeshall Cup) at the San Diego Crew Classic last weekend with a time of 7:53.91.
* "It was a really tight race and fun to watch," head coach Jennifer Zebroski said of the lightweight final. "They had two consistent races and stayed focused throughout the weekend. The results this weekend give us a gauge for the lightweights of where we need to go and what we need to do to get to the IRAs (the Intercollegiate Rowing Association championships from June 3-5 in Camden, N.J.)."
* The varsity and JV boats each finished fifth in the 3rd final, while the novice was fifth in its heat and did not qualify for a final.
Looking to the rest of the spring
* The Aztecs now travel to Marina Del Rey, Calif., for the Miller Cup Regatta on April 24, before heading to Sacramento, Calif., for the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships which take place May 1-2, the Pacific Coast Rowing Championships May 15 and the Pac-10 Championships on May 16. The NCAA Championships take place from May 28-30 in Sacramento and the IRA Championships are June 3-5 in Camden, N.J.
