ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - San Diego State posted three singles victories, but it wasn't enough as New Mexico edged the Aztec men's tennis team, 4-3, in a Mountain West Conference dual match on Sunday at the UNM Tennis Club.
The Aztecs' No. 1 doubles team of Felix Hardt and Ryan Redondo, ranked 44th nationally, was upset by the Lobo tandem of Ryan Stotland and David Kowalski, 8-3. In No. 1 singles action, Hardt grabbed an early lead over 27th-ranked Divan Coetzee with a 6-2 win in the first set. However, the 44th-ranked player fell in the next two sets 6-1 and 6-2.
Redondo defeated Kowalski 2-6, 7-6, 6-4 at No. 2 singles, while Markus Dickhardt and Dontia Haynes were triumphant at No. 3 and No. 5 singles, respectively. However, the Aztecs were unable to overcome the Lobo sweep in doubles action, and saw their record fall to 9-7 overall and 2-2 in the MWC. New Mexico improved to 12-5 on the year, remaining unbeaten at 3-0 in the conference.
The Aztecs will host UC Santa Barbara at noon on April 18 in a non-conference dual match at SDSU Courts before they open MWC tournament play at the Barnes Tennis Center in San Diego on April 29.
