SAN DIEGO - San Diego State used a solid defensive effort and a quick start to earn a 7-4 victory over UC Santa Barbara on Saturday at the Kroc Community Center pool. The Aztecs jumped out to a 4-1 lead after the first quarter and preserved the win by allowing only one goal per quarter in their final MPSF match of the season. SDSU finishes the conference season with an 8-3 record, the most conference wins in Aztec history, and are guaranteed at least a fourth place finish in the final standings. The Aztecs also snapped a season-long three-game losing streak to improve to 19-6 overall.
Dominique Delgado got the Aztecs started for the second straight day with a goal one minute into the match. Sandy Onweller and Savanah Kelley added back-to-back goals to give SDSU a 3-0 lead. After a Gaucho score, Delgado put the finishing touches on a solid quarter by scoring with 14 seconds left.
The second quarter was a defensive struggle with UCSB being able to record the only goal to make the score 4-2 at halftime.
Rachel Serna extended the lead back to three with a power play goal at the 3:28 mark. Onweller and Kelley added their second scores of the match over the next 10 minutes to secure the victory.
Leading the defensive effort was senior Ashley Zabel who posted nine saves, including the 500th save of her career. Zabel stopped several breakaway chances and quality Guacho scoring opportunites throughout the game. She began the game with 499 saves in her four years at SDSU and is currently in second place on SDSU's all-time saves list with 508.
Delgado and Onweller both added two assists to their pair of goals, while Kelley recorded four steals.
SDSU's next matchup is at UCSD on Friday, April 16 for the third annual Harper Cup beginning at 6 p.m.
