SDSU Men's Tennis Defeats BYU for Fourth Straight Victory

April 3, 2004

SAN DIEGO -- The 64th-ranked San Diego State men's tennis team won five of six singles matches to defeat 69th-ranked Brigham Young, 5-1, on Saturday afternoon in Las Vegas.

It was the conference opener for both schools after Friday's matches between SDSU-Utah and BYU-UNLV were rained out. The matches were rescheduled for Saturday morning, but rain kept the matches from being played and the matches will not be made up.

Once the skies cleared Saturday afternoon, the teams opened with singles matches. SDSU claimed wins at the first five singles positions to clinch the match without having to play doubles.

In a match-up between nationally-ranked singles players, SDSU's 63rd-ranked Felix Hardt defeated Erik Nyman, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. The Aztecs also received points with straight set wins from Ryan Redondo at number two and Markus Dickhardt at number three. Daniel Jung at number four and Dontia Haynes at number five each won three-set matches.

San Diego State improves to 8-4 overall and 1-0 in Mountain West Conference play. Brigham Young fell to 3-13 and 0-1 in league action. San Diego State will play at UNLV. The match originally scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., has been moved back one hour and will now start at 11 a.m. PDT.
