Aztec Softball Tops Cal Poly, 3-0, at SDSU Tournament

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team (14-11) rallied for three runs in the third inning against Cal Poly (9-11) on Sunday and beat the Mustangs, 3-0. Pitcher Cori Janelli (Visalia, Calif.) threw her second complete-game shutout of the weekend's SDSU Tournament, a three-hitter. She has thrown 18.1 consecutive scoreless innings and has allowed one earned run in her last 37.1 innings of work. Janelli has all three of the Aztec shutouts this season, the other two coming against Nevada on Friday and Iowa State at the Campbell/Cartier Classic on Feb. 20.

In the top of the third against Cal Poly, shortstop Meagan Hartung (San Diego, Calif.) started the rally with a walk. Center fielder Janna Kovensky (San Diego, Calif.) followed with a double to the right-center gap with Hartung crossing the plate. First baseman Kelcy Murphy (San Diego, Calif.) then smashed a two-run homer over the right-center field fence, her first round-tripper of the season.

Hartung went 2-for-3 with a double against Cal Poly and hit .515 (7-for-13) at the tournament. Kovensky was 1-for-3 in Sunday's action with a double, run and RBI.

The Aztecs begin a busy week at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, hosting No. 23/23 Florida. SDSU then heads to Fresno, Calif., for the Clovis Auto Row Softball Classic, first playing the host Fresno State Bulldogs at 5 p.m. on Thursday. Games with No. 25/19 Oregon State, North Texas, No. 1/1 UCLA and Long Beach State await the Aztecs at the tournament.
