March 5, 2004

Box Score

SAN DIEGO - Pitcher Cori Janelli (Visalia, Calif.) threw her second two-hit shutout of the 2004 campaign and San Diego State defeated Nevada, 6-0, on Friday at the SDSU Tournament. Center fielder Janna Kovensky (San Diego, Calif.) moved into sole possession of second place on the SDSU all-time home run list with a seventh-inning blast over the left-center field fence. The two-run shot gave her 10 for her career, moving her ahead of the nine hit by Sarah Hershman (1999-02) and Trish Mang (1987-88). The school record of 17 is held by Erryn Gutjahr (1996-99).

Janelli retired 21 of 23 batters and took a perfect game into the fifth before allowing a one-out single. The other Nevada batter to reach did so on a two-out single in the seventh. Janelli also has the only other Aztec shutout of the season, 4-0, over Iowa State on Feb. 20, and has allowed only one earned run in her last 30.1 innings, lowering her season ERA from 3.71 to 1.18.

Designated player Danielle Touhey (Fresno, Calif.) swatted a two-run homer in the sixth, scoring sophomore shortstop Meagan Hartung (San Diego, Calif.), who reached on her first career triple. Touhey's homer was her second of the season and of the junior's career and increased SDSU's lead to 4-0.

The last time SDSU hit two homers in the same game occurred on Feb. 8, 2003, when Kovensky and third baseman Bianca Cruz (Glendale, Ariz.) hit one each in a 4-2, eight-inning win at Cal State Northridge, a span of 80 games.

Left fielder Bree Boyer (Huntington Beach, Calif.) sparked the Aztec scoring in the top of the first with a two-run single to center, scoring Hartung and Kovensky.

Kovensky added two hits to go with her homer for a 3-for-4 day. Hartung went 2-for-3 against the Wolf Pack, while five other Aztecs contributed one hit each.

Other scores from Friday's play at the SDSU Tournament: Nevada 7, Syracuse 6 (eight innings); UCLA 4, Syracuse 1; UCLA 4, Cal Poly 0.

On Saturday, the Aztecs look to end a 44-game losing streak to No. 1/1 UCLA at 1 p.m. SDSU last beat the Bruins on April 29, 1977, by a 2-1 count. Saturday also marks the first time the Aztecs have played UCLA on the SDSU campus since the 1990 season. UCLA is currently 18-0 and have won 23 straight, dating back to their successful Women's College World Series run last season. The Bruins have also homered in their past nine games and 16 of their 18 games this season. Immediately following the UCLA game, San Diego State plays Syracuse at 3 p.m.
