SAN DIEGO - Three San Diego State pitchers shut out UCLA for eight innings and the Aztec offense came up with some timely hitting in SDSU's 5-1 win over the Bruins Tuesday night at Tony Gwynn Stadium. It was the sixth win in the last seven outings for San Diego State, which improved to 16-18. With the loss, UCLA saw its record fall to 14-11.
Freshman right-hander Bruce Billings (1-0) made his second start of the season, tossing four shutout innings to pick up his first win of the season. Senior Joey Pace contributed two innings of shutout ball and was followed by Drew Jenson, who allowed a run in the final frame while recording his first save of the year.
San Diego State broke on top in the third inning off Bruin right-hander David Johnson (0-1), who was making his first start. After second baseman Kyle Floquet led off with a single, Jordan Swaydan laced a double down the left field line to bring home the game's opening run. Center fielder Landon Burt then stepped up and deposited his team-leading fifth homer of the season over the right field fence to stake the home side to a 3-0 lead.
The Aztecs padded their lead in the seventh, adding a pair of runs on an RBI single by James Guerrero and a wild pitch that scored Landon Burt from third.
UCLA got a consolation run in the ninth on Anthony Norman's two-out triple that scored Jarrad Page from first.
Guerrero finished the evening with three hits as he saw his hitting streak extend to seven games. Seniors Rielly Embrey and Kyle Floquet also contributed a pair of hits each.
San Diego State resumes Mountain West Conference play this weekend as it hosts league-leading UNLV in a three-game series. The first game of that set is scheduled for Friday night (April 2) at 6:00 p.m. at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
