SAN DIEGO - Coming off of a second place finish in Hawai'i, the Aztecs will attempt to remain hot as they travel to Tucson and play in the Mountain View Collegiate on Saturday and Sunday, March 27-28. SDSU will also get a lift as senior Sandy Kim returns to the lineup after missing the last three tournaments due to injury. Last season, Kim led SDSU to a fourth place finish in Tucson as she placed sixth with a total of 222, including second and third round scores of 71 and 72, respectively. The tournament field consists of 15 teams, including 13 that are ranked in Golfweek's Top 100. In addition, one of the teams not ranked is International Pacific College from Australia, who is the defending champion of the collegiate. The teams will play the Mountain View Golf Course, which is set for 6,040 yards and a par of 72. 36-holes will be played on Saturday with the final round on Sunday. SDSU enters the tournament ranked No. 43 by Golfweek and No. 46 by Golfstat. Kansas State starts the week as the highest ranked team in the field at No. 34.
Starters at Mountain View Collegiate
* SDSU will have senior Sandy Kim rejoin the starting lineup after missing the last three Aztec tournaments due to injury. Kim had played in every tournament of her four year career up to the recent streak. Kim joins a trio of players with very similar numbers as the top Aztec players are all ranked between 115 and 130 in the country and are within five strokes of each other on the season.
* Shayna Miyjima has claimed the top spot in the Aztec rankings at No. 115 with an average of 75.59. Jenna Wilson is second at No. 120 with an average of 75.71. SDSU's hottest player, Heather MacRae, wraps up the trio averaging 75.88 and ranked No. 130 in the country. Kim was averaging 75.86 in her first seven rounds of the season, which is not enough rounds to be included in the rankings.
*The fifth spot this week goes to sophomore Megan Malhaupt. Malhaupt has played in five events, including three with the varisty squad, and recorded an 80.07 stroke average.
Recapping the Thompson Invitational
* SDSU finished second at the Thompson Invitational last week in Hawai'i after shooting 918 (+54). The Aztecs were only behind No. 3 New Mexico and finished ahead of highly ranked Pepperdine and TCU in a quality performance. Heather MacRae led SDSU with a second place finish after shooting 221 (+5). Shayna Miyajima and Jenna Wilson also posted top-20 finishes at 12th and 16th overall. Jamie Oliver posted her second best result of the season, placing 26th with a 238 total.
Senior Duo
*Seniors Shayna Miyajima and Sandy Kim, have been unable to pair up the past three tournaments , but previously the two veterans had almost identical numbers. Entering their final season of play, Miyajima had posted a 77.52 stroke average, while Kim was at 77.58. In addition, Miyajima placed fifth in the MWC individual standings last year, one spot ahead of Kim.
* This season Miyajima owns a 75.59 stroke average, the best on the squad, in 17 rounds of action. Shayna has led the Aztecs in scoring at two different tournaments and has posted three top-20 finishes, including placing 12th at last . Miyajima is also ranked SDSU's top ranked individual at No. 120 in the country according to Golfstat.
* Kim posted a 75.86 average in seven rounds in the fall, the third lowest average for SDSU.
MacRae Making A Run
* Heather MacRae has posted the most impressive results of the spring so far after placing second at last week's Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational in Hawai'i. MacRae leads SDSU with a 75.67 stroke average in two events so far this spring and owns a 75.88 average for the year. MacRae also led SDSU in scoring at the Las Vegas Showdown to finish the fall as she tied for sixth against a great field with a 3-over total of 219. MacRae has recorded a team-best three top-10 results and four top-20 finishes during the year. After a slow start MacRae has been climbing the rankings and is currently 130th in Golfstat's listings.
By The Numbers
* The Aztecs are No. 43 in Golfweek's latest rankings with a rating of 76.02. Against the nation's 47th-ranked schedule, the Aztecs are 45-31 overall and 26-31 against Golfweek's Top 100.
* According to Golfstat's Division I team rankings, SDSU is the country's 46th-ranked team with a division record of 170-47.
* SDSU also has the 23rd ranked freshman class according to Golfstat behind the strength of Jenna Wilson and Jamie Oliver.
