SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State softball team fell to No. 7/9 Oklahoma on Tuesday afternoon, 4-1. Pitchers Cori Janelli (Visalia, Calif.) and Celena Velasquez (Tucson, Ariz.) combined to allow no earned runs in the loss, while third baseman Meagan Hartung (San Diego, Calif.) continued her hot hitting this season with a 2-for-3 performance, raising her season batting average to .367.
The Sooners scored their four runs in the fifth inning, all unearned. Three were scored when the first four Oklahoma batters reached on a combination of three singles, two errors and a bunted fielder's choice in which the attempt to get the advance runner was unsuccessful. The fourth crossed the plate on an RBI single.
San Diego State rallied in the bottom of the seventh. Center fielder Janna Kovensky (San Diego, Calif.) singled to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a misplay by the Sooner right fielder. Hartung followed with a base hit, scoring Kovensky, cutting the deficit to 4-1, but Oklahoma pitcher Kami Keiter retired the next three Aztecs.
San Diego State co-hosts the San Diego Classic from March 19-21 with the University of San Diego. All Aztec games take place at SDSU Field. SDSU plays two games on Friday (at 1 p.m. against Southern Utah and at 3 p.m. versus Indiana), one on Saturday (3 p.m. vs. Dartmouth) and two on Sunday (at 9 a.m. against Buffalo and 11 a.m. versus UC Riverside).
