SAN DIEGO - San Diego State pitcher Cori Janelli (Visalia, Calif.) earned Mountain West Conference pitcher of the week honors for her performance at the Clovis Auto Row Softball Classic in Fresno, Calif., last week. She allowed only two runs, both on a two-run home run by No. 1/1 UCLA in complete-game performances against the Bruins and No. 15/17 Fresno State.
She started the weekend with a dominating performance over No. 15/17 Fresno State on Thursday in front of 1,817 Bulldog fans, throwing a three-hit shutout and winning, 1-0. In the process, she pinned a rare loss on Bulldog pitcher Jamie Southern (11-2). The shutout win extended her scoreless innings streak to 25.1 innings and, at that point, she had allowed only one earned run in her previous 44.1 innings of work.
In Saturday's game with No. 1/1 UCLA, Bruin center fielder Stephanie Ramos ended the scoreless streak in a hurry with a towering two-run blast over the right field fence with one out in the first. Janelli responded by retiring the next seven batters, including striking out three consecutive Bruins at one point, and scattering six hits in the complete-game performance. Unfortunately for Janelli, the SDSU offense couldn't get anything going against UCLA pitcher Lisa Dodd and the Aztecs fell, 2-0.
Janelli has now allowed two runs in her last 31.1 innings and three earned runs in her last 50.1 innings. She has lowered her ERA from 3.09 prior to the streak to 1.02.
Janelli and the Aztecs host No. 6/t7 Oklahoma at 3 p.m. on Tuesday before co-hosting the San Diego Classic with the University of San Diego this weekend.
