Aztecs Fall To 8th-Ranked Long Beach State 5-0

March 13, 2004

Box Score

SAN DIEGO - Long Beach State scored five unearned runs and pitcher Cesar Ramos limited SDSU hitters to two singles as the 8th-ranked 49ers defeated San Diego State, 5-0, Saturday night during the Aztec Invitational at PETCO Park.

Ramos (3-1) faced just three batters over the minimum as he allowed two hits while walking two and striking out eight. SDSU's Rielly Embrey (second inning) and James Guerrero (fourth inning) were the only Aztecs to reach safely against the LBSU left-hander.

San Diego State senior Daryl Harang (1-3) was the victim of a pair of miscues and a lack of offensive production as he suffered his third loss of the season. Over his 5.1 innings of work, he gave up four unearned runs on five hits while walking two and striking out four.

The 49ers put four runs on the board in the fifth inning with two outs. With a runner on third, SDSU shortstop James Guerrero scooped up a routine grounder off the bat of T.J. Bruce, but his throw to first was too high, allowing Long Beach to take a 1-0 lead. After a walk put runners on first and second, Steve Velasco and John Vargas hit back-to-back singles to bring home three more runs.

Long Beach State (13-4) added a fifth run in the eighth when Brad Davis reached on an error to open the inning and eventually scored. Ramos closed out the game by retiring the final 12 batters he faced over the last four frames. SDSU saw its record fall to 10-16 with the loss.

The Aztecs close out the 2004 Aztec Invitational at PETCO Park on Sunday when they face Nebraska in the finales at 7:00 p.m.
