SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State football squad put the finishing touches on its 2004 spring session with a two-hour scrimmage at the Aztec practice fields Friday afternoon.
The final workout of the spring was a showcase for SDSU's running backs. Junior Michael Franklin ran for 80 yards and a touchdown on just 12 carries, highlighted by a 23-yard run. Redshirt freshman Brandon Bornes bruised his way to 61 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. He had five carries for at least six yards.
The longest scoring drive of the day was a 65-yard march directed by redshirt freshman quarterback Kevin O'Connell. The nine-play drive was culminated by a 13-yard touchdown pass from O'Connell to tight end Adam Watson. Watson would later add another touchdown catch in an overtime situation drill. South Florida transfer Marcus Edwards also had a TD grab in a goal-line drill.
"This was phase one," said head coach Tom Craft. "We broke our players down a little bit physically but we came out of this pretty good. If there was a surprise it was our ability to run the ball.
"We ran better and more consistently than any time I can remember," Craft added. "That's encouraging for a young offensive line."
The Aztec defenders continued to be active. Sophomore Jonathan Bailes was credited with three quarterback sacks and redshirt freshman Nicholas Osborn had two sacks as did senior defensive lineman Blake Lobel. As a team, the blackshirts had 20 tackles behind the line of scrimmage.
